Information about this open space

Victoria Park is a neighbourhood park with around 5.7 hectares of open parkland. It includes sports fields, grass maze, play areas, wild life habitats and ornamental gardens, situated near the heart of Taunton.  The park provides the local community with a safe environment in which to play sport and acts as a green thoroughfare for many from local housing estates towards the town centre.  The park has changed a lot over the years, being used for allotments during the Second World War and later returned to sports fields.  Local people set up the Victoria Park Action Group in 2002 to embark on park regeneration, to encourage safe use of the park and reduce anti-social behaviour. They hold regular entertainment events in the park throughout the year. There is also a youth arts club every Saturday morning in the pavilion organised by Barnardos for young children.  A major development plan is in place and the first phase of this is now complete. This includes a new Kindergarten, Junior play area, Multi Use Games Area, Youth Shelter and new landscaping. A new wildlife garden has replaced the old Kindergarten and a new community garden is planned for 2008.  In 2006 ten oak trees were planted to commemorate the life of Ann Frank and the visit to Taunton of the international Ann Frank exhibition.
