Information about this open space

Ropner Park is a fine example of a traditional Victorian Park.  It has been the principle town park of Stockton-on-Tees since its opening in 1893 and for generations people have visited the park to enjoy the recreational facilities, to relax and to experience the unique and vibrant atmosphere.  It is home to fine examples of traditional Victorian park features that have been laid out in a classical park manner - such as a fountain, a bandstand, superbly engineered main entrance gates, bowling greens, tree avenues and formal bedding displays.  The ornamental lake, situated in the northern half of the park, is still a popular feature and focal point for visitors.  In 2006, the park received a major refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Board.  This included the construction of a pavilion, tennis courts and play area, as well as the installation of the unique art feature ‘Fish Swallowing Bird’.  The park’s main drives and other original features were also refurbished and returned to their former glory.  The most significant development in the park’s improvement has been the formation of the Friends of Ropner Park.  The group have established the pavilion cafĂ© as a successful business, which opens seven days per week.  Profits from this venture are used in part to run a series of public events and concerts, which have helped to increase the reputation of the park as a key asset to the people of Stockton.
