01273 293080Preston Park Preston Park, opened in 1883 and is the largest urban park in Brighton & Hove. It creates an impressive gateway into the city on the main road from London. It is Brighton & Hove’s pre-eminent city park, a major cultural venue hosting large events such as Gay Pride, which during 2006 attracted 120,000 people from all over the country. There are also smaller community focussed events such as the ‘Pro-Am’ Mayoral Bowls Tournament and organised activities for children during the Summer. It provides a place of tranquillity away from busy city life and offers an interesting ornamental landscape with horticultural features requiring a high standard of maintenance. The park is listed on English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens as being of special historic interest in England as Grade II. Wildlife is encouraged by the thoughtful management of habitats and the colourful bedding displays designed by children make an impressive scene during the summer months. The diverse character of the park mean that it attracts people from across the city but it also serves as a park to the local community. Recent improvements to the park include a refurbished multi-play area, the restoration of the Rotunda cafe, the rotunda pond and the replanting of the Rose Garden, assisted by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
