Information about this open space

Duncan Down is the largest green space in Whitstable.  Originally earmarked for housing in the 1930’s, the land now provides opportunities for local people to walk with friends, sit, relax, listen to the birds, look out for wildlife, appreciate the magnificent view across the coastline of Whitstable Bay, slow the pace of life, play sports and walk the dog.  The site now enjoys extended Village Green status which serves to protect its 18 hectares for current and future generations.  The woodland, scrubland, grassland and stream provide a mosaic of habitats from which a wide range of plants, birds and animals can benefit.  Kent Wildlife Trust recognise the site as a Local Wildlife Site.  The Down is managed by the Friends of Duncan Down in conjunction with Canterbury City Council.  The Friends of Duncan Down have helped to improve the social and environmental aspects of the local community by creating and maintaining an active green space.  The Friends are made up of over 140 registered local volunteers who hold annual meetings and task days, when the public can take part in the management and maintenance of the site.  The Friends monitor the site and carry out minor maintenance works.  Duncan Down is situated to the east of Borstal Hill, which is the main road into Whitstable off the old Thanet Way.  To find out more about Duncan Down please contact the Countryside Officer at Canterbury City Council on 01227 862187.
