Information about this open space

Saltwell Park, known locally as The Peoples Park, opened to the public in 1867 and soon became a major regional attraction. Between 2000 and 2005, it was transformed back to its former Victorian glory with a £6.7 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a £3 million contribution from Gateshead Council. The aim of the project was to conserve Saltwell Park, which is recognised as one of the North East’s finest examples of a nineteenth-century municipal park, at a critical stage in its life and to safeguard its continued success into the twenty first century. Saltwell Park provides facilities for over 2million annual visitors and a venue for wide-ranging activities and events in spectacular parkland, which is a place of historic importance and natural beauty. It retains traditional values of park life, encompassing social tolerance, access for all, community integration, education, environmental understanding and recreation, improving the quality of life of the residents and visitors of Gateshead. The refurbished Saltwell Towers strengthened the parks position as an important regional visitor attraction. The park’s importance is recognised through awards that include: Green Flag Awards,Civic Trust Award 2006, Best Park In Britain 2005, Regional Winner Best Park in Britain 2006, Saltwell Towers 2005 Regional Gold Award’ RICS.
