Information about this open space

West Bank Park is approximately 6.5 hectares (16 acres) in size and to the West of the City Centre towards Acomb. Acomb Road borders it to the north, New Lane, to the east and Hamilton Drive to the south.  Within the park there are lawns and flowers beds, toilets, pergola walk, bowling greens and pavilion, younger and older children’s play areas, and a woodland walk.  Directly opposite the James Backhouse Place entrance to the park is a small-dedicated car park. The Lord Mayor of York formally opened “West Park” on the 28th of July 1938.  For much of the preceding century the site had been used as a plant nursery which include a large house.  The next fifty years see the present park layout and surrounds come into being.  In 1972 both West Bank House and Lodge were demolished, water features and rockeries filled in or removed.  Remains of the buildings can just about be found in the woodland off Acomb Road, whilst the formal lawns and cypresses remain as testament to the layout of the site.  Two bowling greens are enjoyed by the West Bank Park Bowls club and local schools regularly visit the park on educational trips. Two play areas cater for the needs of younger people whilst the newly opened café is aptly named “A Break in the Park”.
