01162526703Opened in 1849, Welford Road Cemetery is Leicester’s oldest municipal cemetery and is still in use today. Listed Grade 2 in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens, the cemetery has changed little over the years and contains many classical headstones and monuments demonstrating the wealth and standing of individuals buried there. Set high on a hill, the cemetery offers striking views out across Leicester and beyond. The mature trees (many of which were planted originally when the site was first opened) and the diverse wildlife and flora offer all visitors peace and tranquillity and the opportunity to explore the diverse and fascinating site. The Cemetery was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 2004, with work completed on site in 2006. The main aspect of the restoration project was the creation of a striking new Visitor Centre, staffed by volunteers and open to the public to visit. Other improvements included the resurfacing of pathways around the site and new landscaping on the site of the former chapels, with 100 plaques commemorating notable figures buried at the cemetery. Work has also been carried out to conserve a number of headstones across the site.
