Information about this open space

Workman Gardens situated on the south side of the river Avon opposite Abbey Park combines its historical inheritance with a modern day continental ambience. The latter is especially evoked by the coloured up lighting of the Lime Tree Avenue. Alderman Henry Workman gifted these linear riverside gardens to the town in 1864 for the enjoyment of the public.  The gardens continue to fulfil this aim today offering the peace and quiet of a riverside walk, enjoying the views, feeding the swans. Also the opportunity to try your hand at a game of Petanque on the modern gravel courts, along with an exciting schedule of summer events such as the Eastern Festival in June and the River Festival in July. A whale bone arch which has been in the Gardens for over 100 years makes an unusual piece of art which intrigues visitors. Not something one expects to find by the river Avon.  The Gardens have been especially designed to cater for disabled as well as able visitors, car parking on site is exclusively for the disabled and appropriate ramps and handrails have been installed to allow access to the towpath. The Spirit of Freedom on Avon, [specially adapted to take wheelchairs] runs a variety of trips along the river including on board catering giving that final touch to a special day out.
