Victoria Park

Information about this open space

Victoria Park incorporating St. Mary’s Rest Garden is a green oasis, providing an invaluable resource to the local community in a highly urbanised area. The park dates back to 1832, when the land was donated by Samuel Fox for use as a cemetery after an out break of cholera. In 1945 the council took over responsibility for the park and moved the tombstones and monuments. the most celebrated occupant is William Thompson, a renowned prizefighter known as Bendigo, whose tomb is guarded by a statue of a lion.  Supported by an active Friends Group, the park has enjoyed progressive improvements including play areas, toilets, footpaths, Football and basket ball facilities, new events and an inter faith garden containing newly planted trees symbolising a unified wish for world peace and tolerance.
