Mr and Mrs Tessier moved to Torquay in 1903. Mrs Tessier purchased the land in 1906. The garden was transferred to Torbay Council on October 27th 1933. The Council erected a sun temple to thank Mrs Tessier for her kind donation. In May 1975 the St Marychurch and Babbacombe Rotary Club provided braille equipment for the blind garden. Mrs Tessier Clarke, Manager of Babbacombe Church of England and JP died in 1942. Tessier Garden is situated in the heart of St Marychurch. It has three welcoming entrances and has good and safe access for all. The site is regularly visited by Torbay Council’s park wardens and is locked at night. The garden is maintained to high horticultural standard by Torquay North’s grounds maintenance contractor Plandscape. A proportion of the gardens waste is recycled on site. No peat is used in the gardens. Plandscape also have a pesticide reduction policy in place. The gardens has two shelters built in 1903 and a natural shelter, including a pergola archway with clematis and wisteria planted amongst dahlias and roses. The main features of the gardens include a diverse range of trees and shrubs and has a recently resurfaced tarmacadum footpath which meanders around the gardens under a pergola archway and passed well stocked rose and shrub borders planted with scented plants. The gardens also has a natural pond where newts, frogs, toads, dragon flies and butterflies can often be seen. The gardens has a promotional leaflet and is overseen by Tessier Gardens Friends Group.
