Information about this open space

East Finchley Cemetery which is also know as St. Marylebone Cemetery is located in the London Borough of Barnet. Work started on laying it out in 1854 and it was consecrated in 1855 with the first burial the following day. The cemetery is the final resting place of a number of individuals of note including P.C. Keith Blakelock who died during the Tottenham riots. This cemetery has a diverse habitat which includes 4 species of bat as well as supporting a wide variety of woodland birds, invertebrates, bats and possibly even reptiles - the City Council is taking steps to develop a biodiversity management plan. All green waste is recycled in the cemetery and this will be used to provide a backfill for new graves having the advantage of acting as a barrier to preventing toxins entering the water table. The ambience of the cemetery ensures that it is a quiet restful place where users can go to visit the graves of their loved ones but also somewhere where others can go for a few moments of quiet solitude.
