0208 693 8635Dulwich Park first opened its gates to the public in 1890. The park was designed by two prominent Victorian individuals; Charles Barry Junior and Lt. Col. J.J. Sexby. The Park covers an area of 29 hectares. Dulwich Park was awarded a grant of £3.90 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the restoration of this important Grade ll registered park. The project started in May 2005 and completed in July 2006, when a grand opening was held. The main elements of the scheme included; full restoration of the entrance gates and pillars; conversion of the former park offices into changing room facilities; conversion of the old changing room pavilion into a new park centre; a new multi-use court; lake improvements including a new boardwalk; resurfacing of the carriageway and paths; restoration of the horse ride; improvement to the planting within the American garden. The new Francis Peek Community Building provides a focus for the park, with a visitor centre, staff offices and community room. The latter is a venue for Children’s Music workshops, pilates classes, Art workshops and exhibitions, and partnership working with London Wildlife Trust and the Picture Gallery. In 2007 the Green Fair conducted workshops and talks in the building culminating with a spectacular barn dance in the evening. Dulwich Park offers a wide range of sporting facilities, a café, conservation areas, children’s playground, boating lake, Bowling Green and feature gardens, including the Drought Tolerant Garden and Winter Garden. Whatever you enjoy doing, there’s something for everyone.
