Information about this open space

Brandling Park is a small but perfectly formed park close to the city centre. Tucked in beside the Great North Road, its village green atmosphere makes it a pleasant oasis for the local residents and the many people who walk through towards the universities and the city centre. Thick shrubbery, screen planting and mature trees look attractive and baffle the sounds from the motorway.  This dense planting slows the prevailing wind creating a warm microclimate and provides shelter for wildlife.  Open grass banks which catch the sun are especially attractive to sun worshippers and lunch time picnickers.  In the summer months bowls games add to the gentle atmosphere of the park.  Volunteers are frequently seen in the park carrying out maintenance tasks, planting young trees to ensure continuity of tree cover or planting bulbs and maintaining the flower beds. These activities are part practical work and part social occasion.  The Friends of Brandling Park welcome all visitors and other groups to take part in the planting activities and help create the safe, relaxed and friendly feel of the park.
