01865467255Hinksey Park was laid out in the 1930’s on the site of the former Oxford Waterworks that operated from 1854 to 1933. Hinksey Park’s unique character and atmosphere is due mainly to the presence of water and the mature evergreen trees. There is a lake, boating lake, outdoor swimming pool, children’s water splash fountains and water ditches surrounding the northern border. Dense Victorian development surrounds the park so it provides an important recreational greenspace for the local community, with the swimming pool and park attracting tourists and visitors from across the city. Access to the park is easy for visitors using all forms of transport. Buses stop nearby, a Sustran cycle route runs through the park and car parking is provided at the main entrance. Visitors are welcomed with a clear sign, offering a map of the park, closing times, emergency numbers and information on the park’s facilities. Visitors to the park can play tennis, hire a paddle boat, use the play area or visit the free splash fountains. The swimming pool is open from May to September and is one of the largest outdoor pools in the south of England. The park is well maintained by a team of full time gardeners and skilled parks staff, and kept secure by a team of park rangers.
