Walker Park

Information about this open space

Walker park has received a green flag for the second year running. Park Staff are delighted at the achievement after all their hard work over the previous year. Walker Park is situated near the heart of Walker on the junction of Wharrier Street and Scrogg Road. The park comprises 10 hectares of parkland originally laid out in 1888. Seamus Tollitt, park manager said ‘ 2008 is a special year for the park as it is 120 years old and the award of the green flag is the icing on the birthday cake’. The park is well used and has a number of facilities including 2 quality bowling greens, a modern play area, a tennis court and basket ball area and two football pitches. Facilities are located within mature parkland which creates a feeling of tranquillity in a built up area of the city.  Walker Park hosts a number of events throughout the year including the annual bonfire night celebration with a spectacular fireworks display, the community festival in spring, the World in Walker festival in July and activities organised for young people during the summer holidays. The park acts as a focus for the community and provides opportunities for local people to get involved.  The park is one of the few original areas of Walker that have survived since the area was first developed in the 1800s. It provides people with a sense of continuity in an area that is undergoing change with the Walker Riverside regeneration.
