01372732000Epsom Common is owned and managed by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council. It is located in the Southern part of the Borough, off the B280 and A24. The Stew Pond car park is located along the B280 and the site is a short walk from Epsom station and a nearby bus stop serviced by ‘Epsom Buses’. Much of Epsom Common was designated a site of special scientific interest in 1955 and is noted for its breeding bird habitat, veteran trees and associated dead wood invertebrates. Epsom Common comprises a wide range of habitats including heath land, grassland, ancient woodland and wetlands, and in addition was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2001. It is home to a huge variety of wildlife including Britain’s rarest and smallest ladybird Clitosthetus arcuatus. However, Epsom Common is not just important for wildlife. With its hard surfaced tracks and carefully managed public access, people can enjoy the site on foot, cycle and horse back. To enhance the experience of our visitors the site is interpreted in a range of ways. There are interpretation panels, two site leaflets, web pages and the Countryside Team also organises an annual events programme which includes guided walks around Epsom Common. The Countryside Team works closely with Natural England and the staff at neighbouring Ashtead Common to ensure the site is managed to enhance the habitats to support the greatest variety of wildlife, and continues to be a wonderful resource for people to enjoy now and in the future.
