Information about this open space

A highly popular park in the north-west area of the City of Worcester, Gheluvelt Park is an oasis for local people and visitors alike. The park presents visitors with two different experiences. The older, original Gheluvelt Park was opened in 1922 and is ornamental in character with a wide brook, duck-pond, bandstand, War Memorial gate, paddling pool, tennis/netball courts and Sons of Rest facilities. The new riverside park has a wonderful setting next to the river Severn, with views across to the adjacent Kepax Country Park. Major redevelopment over the past three years has seen a disused water treatment works dramatically transformed into a park with a ‘natural’ character. The park boasts the Pump House Environment Centre, a converted and renovated Victorian pumping station which is now the home of the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust environmental charity. This wonderful building is a model of sustainable energy sources, with wind turbines, solar energy and ground-source heating supplying the building with heat and power. Rain water harvested from the roofs of the building is utilised for the flushing of toilets etc.
