Information about this open space

Barnhill Rock Garden is a public park of 2 ha, located along the esplanade in Broughty Ferry is approximately four miles from the city centre of Dundee.  Situated on part of a former golf course, the Rock Garden was started in 1955 by clearing an area of volcanic rock which had at one time been the old shoreline.  Over the years it was extended eastwards over areas which had been sand dunes, and rock from a local quarry used to form a large part of the garden.  It is a gently undulating south sloping informal garden, with an outlook over the River Tay There were originally five natural springs and the lowest pond is the site of one of those, the others dried up in 1976.  In the 1980’s two new water features were added creating a tranquil environment and a haven for wildlife.  Plants come from many sources.  The Friends of the Barnhill Rock Garden have donated seeds and cuttings and the Scottish Rock garden Club and Dundee Botanic garden has also made generous donations.  The Rock Garden is on the Scottish Tourist Board tourist trail and is open to the public at all times.  The Geddes Glasshouse that was donated to the Friends by Dundee Contemporary Arts provides a meeting place for the people of Dundee.  Interpretation and information boards in the glasshouse give an insight into the garden and its role in the community and also provide information on local environmental projects.
