Information about this open space

The panorama from the top of Beacon Hill is one of the key reasons this site is so popular. The views are fantastic!  But it offers much more for many different visitors.  Situated within Charnwood Forest and The National Forest, Beacon Hill is one of the few remaining areas of lowland heathland in the County. Over recent years much work has been undertaken, removing trees, scrub and bracken and to restore the habitat. It is now grazed by rare breeds of sheep and cattle.  The work has also revealed much more of the Bronze Age Hill Fort once located here.  Interpretive panels explain the landscape.  A 3-mile cycle route and horsetrack circuit has been completed around the whole site this year, and is already well used.  There is a waymarked trail through woodlands in the West Beacon Fields and an audio trail through the Native Tree Collection designed by visually impaired young people gives information about the trees.  A permanent orienteering course is also being established. The Country Park also makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside.  The Rangers at Beacon Hill also organise a series of events, which this year include several training workshops in rural skills.  The annual highlight is The National Forest Wood Fair, now in its fourth year, which showcases the woodland economy including craft demonstrations, trade stands and local food.
