Castle Gardens has witnessed over 400 years of history. From days of great grandeur from the time the Manor House was built there, to the days of the 1641 Rebellion and the 1707 Great Fire. This is a story waiting to be told: of the people who influenced the development of the site, of Dutch and French influences, of garden design and planting which competed alongside the best in Europe. Visitors today will be able to see the beautifully landscaped upper nineteenth century gardens and listed monuments, including the Egret and Wallace Fountains, restored. The World War Two air raid shelter is now a bright new education facility which will be used by newly appointed education staff to deliver an exciting programme to local schools, groups and visitors. The Council are very pleased, with support from Heritage Lottery Fund, to be able to offer further programming and events in the Gardens organised through Lisburn Museum’s Education Service. The building also houses a new information point that holds a full display detailing the restoration project and the history of the gardens for visitors to view at their leisure.
