017480827174Friary Gardens are at the heart of the Historic Georgian Town of Richmond, providing an area of tranquillity for residents and visitors alike; the formality of the rose gardens and flower beds is offset by open grassed areas for children to play and for people to picnic in. The impressive back drop of the Grade 1 listed Franciscan Grey Friars Tower does not overpower the visitor. The gardens are used throughout the year by all sections of the community from theatrical productions, musical events, services of remembrance, along with school trips throughout the year; as well as being the focus for the town’s Christmas lights switch on event. The gardens are located on the main road into Richmond and visible to everyone who passes, where the wide paths and numerous seating areas, and the total lack of “ Keep Off the Grass” signs encourage you to deviate from the pavements and walk through the gardens. The gardens have been regularly enhanced over time with donations, such as an ornamental well and an oak gazebo from the Rotary International or the Soroptimist garden of fragrance The gardens are small but perfectly formed, incredibly versatile and extensively utilised; they are well loved and cherished by the local community and visitors alike as a place where you can sit, relax and just enjoy the surroundings.
