Information about this open space

Donington le Heath House was built over 700 years ago.  It was acquired by Leicestershire County Council in 1965 and restored from its former use as a pig farm to open as a museum in 1972.  Today it is furnished with 17th century furniture.  The gardens have also been recreated in the same period with flower beds, a herb garden, orchard and ornamental maze.  The plant varieties are carefully chosen examples from the times of Stuart Kings and before.  The museum is famed for its programme of events which include re-enactments, hands on activities, demonstrations to interpret history and archaeology and the annual Apply Day event.  The Manor also offers a range of educational services including sessions on ‘Life in Tudor Times’ and environmental events.  The County Council has recently acquired some land adjacent to the Manor which has been planted with native trees.  It also contains a wetland area and earthwork fishponds. The Manor is situated in the National Forest.  Add to this a well stocked shop and excellent tearooms and you have the perfect day out.
