It is ten acres in size and since it became a public park in 1877 it has retained most of its original features and vernacular architecture. The park’s boundaries original railings and limestone rubble walls are still in situ. The two Victorian Pavillions were expertly restored in recent years by Limerick Civic Trust. The band-stand erected in 1895 and the Richard Russell Memorial Fountain erected in 1877 are unique cast iron features particularly the drinking fountain which is one of two made by the George Smith Foundry in Glasgow. Its sister fountain is in Belfast. The Thomas Spring Rice memorial which towers over the park pre-dates the Peoples’ Park as it was erected in 1822. The original maze of pathways around this monument are in the same location to this day. The Infant’s Memorial and the Children’s Playground were new additions to the park in 2002.
The park has a large selection of mature, deciduous and evergreen trees such as, Ash, Beech, Birch, Elm, False Acacia, Flowering Cherry, Flowering Crab, Hawthorn, Holly, Hornbeam, Horse Chestnut, Lime, Maple, Mountain Ash, Oak, Ornamental Pear, Plane, Poplar, Walnut, Whitebeam and Willow plus, of course, a wonderful display of flowers during the summer months. The park’s opening hours are: 8am to dusk during Autumn, Winter and Spring, and 8am to 9pm during the summer. The People’s Park won the Best Local Park Special Category Award, 2003, in The City Neighbourhood Competition run by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. This is an Irish National competition for the 5 major cities of Ireland such as Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. The Peoples’ Park won the National Award again in 2004. The success of winning the Green flag in 2008 gives the Park the international status and recognition it deserves.
