The Civic TrustBrixworth Country Park forms part of a Millennium Lottery funded national demonstration project, providing “Countryside Access for All” and receives over 450,000 visitors a year.
Managed by Northamptonshire County Council, the park was developed and designed with the help of the local community. All features in the park are accessible and include a visitor centre and shop, a “garden to excite the senses”, accessible play area, keep fit trail, sculpture trails, café, cycle hire/shop, waymarked cycling and walking trails, electric buggies, wheelchairs and adapted bicycles for hire, and picnic and barbecue areas.
Uniquely, the park has a 24 bed accessible countryside residential centre giving people of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy the countryside. The purpose built centre is all on one level, with six bedrooms, a lounge/meeting room, four shower rooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and garden area. Concessionary rates are available for target groups for example from deprived areas.
There are three waymarked trails, with gradients of less than 1:20, cross falls less than 1:50 and suitable all weather surfacing and resting places can be found at least every 200 metres. Fieldfare Trust BT Countryside For All guidelines have been adopted as a standard of countryside access: http://www.fieldfare.org.uk
